Professor Clayton is an active researcher. His current research interests include cultural self and learner motivation, cognitive load factors, micro-credential and one plus X certificate validation, the impact of e-learning technologies on learner achievement and evaluation of educational environments using perceptual measures.He has been a member of the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission Identity Access Management (IAM) and Federated Identity Management (FIM) Reference Group (2015) the New Zealand Ministry of Education e-Learning Reference Group (2005 - 2010), the Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network (KAREN) Services Working Group, Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ) (2010-12).
